About the Author
words "A 1937 journalism graduate of the University of Georgia, Edmund C. Hughes entered the newspaper field that same year as managing editor of a weekly, the Cobb County Times, in Marietta, Georgia. Through ROTC at Georgia, Hughes obtained a commission as a reserve second lieutenant. He was called to active duty on April 1, 1941 and served overseas under the command of General Douglas MacArthur as a public relations officer and entered the retired reserve with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was awarded the Bronze Star decoration in 1945 and witnessed the surrender of the Japanese on September 2, 1945. Following the war, he returned to Marietta, Georgia and resumed his journalism career as general manager of the Cobb County Times. Five years later, he joined a leading printing company, Higgins-McArthur and after holding several managerial positions was promoted to executive vice-president in1956 and acquired part ownership in the firm. He continued as a printing company executive while attaining many positions of leadership in both the printing and newspaper industry, as well as civic and charitable organizations. Since retirement, Hughes has completed his autobiography, "Living by the Seat of My Pants", "Chuckles" A Treatise on Homespun Humor, and has engaged in compiling and editing books, mostly for friends and associates who have written their memoirs.
