The author is a 9th generation descendant of Richard Davenport. He grew up in Warren County, Tennessee in the area where Edmond Davenport settled about 1835. He served in the U. S. Army from 1951-1954. Seventeen months of his service was in Germany. Following his military service he attended college, earning a B.A. degree from Union University, M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University and a M.L.S. degree from George Peabody College. Professional work experience includes pastoral work, college teaching, and college library work. From 1981 until his retirement in 1998 he served as a chaplain at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
He is married to the former Myra Jane Agee. They have one daughter, Carla Leanne Davenport Penner, and three grandchildren.
