About the Book
An amalgam of inner insurgence and assiduous search for what lies not in this world, yet rather in what's beyond, the real world-that constitutes Vincent Salem's essence.
With the tragic loss of both his parents in a terrible car accident, hence now raised by his aunt Salma, who is an avid reader and active thinker herself, the-still-quite-young Vincent starts invading his aunt's monstrous library, reading books by the ancient Greek philosophers and international authors, which - contrary to the anticipated consequences of so progressively intellectual an act by a mere child - causes him no mental vertigo insomuch as it supplies his entirety with enlightenment, that is, concomitantly with inspiring him to develop a promising writing talent.
Ill-fatedly for Vincent, his continual struggle to gain recognition in the literary field proves fruitless. Now in his mid-twenties, his disappointment represents the dark influence of what querulous doom imposes on an already happening helplessness. Only such misfortune does not rescind the Lebanese writer's relentlessness; for responding to an ad from a British Pop band named Silence Womb, Vincent mails them samples of a few lyrics which he wrote earlier in his life, a couple of which are accepted and featured in the band's newly released album, the outcome of which is not mere receipt of much-needed royalties, yet rather, more importantly, introducing him to John Waters, co-owner of London-based Aurora Publishing Company, who happens to be on good terms with the producer of Silence Womb.
And so, now, after whole long years of poverty and frustration, and with his earlier works ending up either banned or unpublished in Lebanon, John Waters champions Vincent's cause, thus successfully publishing two of his novels.
In consequence, Vincent's success evolves quite laudably, writing off the embitterment of his previous, unmitigated agonies for the better benefit of the now bold venturing into publishing even a play, the triumph of which insomuch as it suggests symptoms of a bizarre fusion of megalomania and schizophrenia within the author's persona, yet never fails at testifying to the profundity of his so-regarded rare philosophical madness.
From another equally stimulating aspect, now at the age of thirty-five, Vincent - who is anti-marriage to the bone, who neither divorces his pipe, nor values water to be in any way healthier than wine, who is quite an unwavering protester against the world's teaching schemes, and who equally finds no grander worth than that disclosed in the seeming pandemonium of silence - meets the love of his life, his own Ashtoreth, an Italian fan of his named Sofia Gintelli, who, from her part, considers him not merely an unexampled person, yet also her idol and the Caesar of her heart. An incomparable romance indeed, evolving from letters of admiration to an actual, reciprocated love!
Yes, the loving warmth of Sofia's presence in his life arrives almost simultaneously with the release of Vincent's philosophical reflections on life's most controversial issues, recapitulated in a book entitled Now a Portion of Reality, soon after which the active playwright in him re-ventures into yet another creation, Sofia and Samuel, which is wholly and indisputably inspired by none but his beloved from Rome.
Now, while destiny's amiability, no, even over-generosity, compensates for all his past, insufferable despair, Vincent, quite unexpectedly, experiences an uneasy though intermittent ache which he self-diagnoses as stomach-ulcer, a few months after which he asks himself a life-altering question: Will fate consent the continuance of a promising happiness?
