About the Book
Rezekne, in eastern Latvia, is a fascinating, little known town which has kept its identity against all odds. Off the beaten track, it has a different feel to the rest of the country - with its separate Latgalian language, Catholic heritage, proximity to Russia, border-town historical influences and enchanting scenery.
Long Road to Rezekne traces the journey of an Australian of Latvian descent who travels to Rezekne for the first time and visits the places where her grandfather, a Latvian Railways stationmaster, lived and worked prior to World War II. An easy to read travelogue and memoir, it records the impressions that this little known eastern province made on a newcomer to the area. The journey records some family history, travel stories, historical vignettes and includes some photos of Rezekne.
