About the Book

Poultry Nutrition and Feeding was written as a text and study guide for college students. The text covers a broad range of subjects. Anchoring concepts and learning objectives are stated at the beginning of each chapter. The chapters are organized to help the students understand the important concepts, and each chapter ends with questions and exercises to help students understand the material.

Chapters on the nutrients are grouped around common functions and deficiency symptoms. There are chapters organized around understanding the basic principles of what carbohydrates, lipids and proteins are and what they do. There are chapters on bioenergetics, and methods to determine and interpret nutritional requirements. Other chapters discuss feed ingredients, feed analysis techniques and feed formulation.

There are several chapters on feed formulation techniques, with examples using a widely available spreadsheet program. The chapters emphasize the economic aspects of feed formulation. The spreadsheets may be downloaded from our website and are available in 12 different languages. Several chapters deal with material that that may be presented as part of a laboratory for a poultry or basic animal nutrition course. There is a detailed chapter on very basic feed analyses, and one on feed composition. Two chapters present typical experiments to demonstrate nutritional deficiencies and the effect of diet on egg size and shell quality.

Chapters on practical diets compare and contrast National Research Council recommendations with those of commercial poultry breeding companies. A glossary helps students understand the material as they go through the book and course.
