About the Book

Harmonic bases of the flamenco guitar use a universal musical theory. This approach tries to put within the reach of the flamenco guitarist a series of instruments which allow him to boost his creativity without the need to memorise. At the same time it gives the non flamenco guitarist, interested in fusion, access to such a complex music through a basic theory which he already knows.

It is not only a book on how to learn to play flamenco mechanically but also to understand it. It is for all guitarists, professionals and amateurs.

It includes brief notes about the history of harmony and of flamenco, harmonic characteristics of different styles in addition to practical exercises of auto-correction.

It is the ideal complement to all other available methods of learning the flamenco guitar is available. The student will benefit immediately from this book without having to consult complicated books on classic harmony or jazz. On reading it he will be able to enter in the passionate world of composition, with little effort and will create his own falsettos along all the neck of the guitar.

The didactic contents, as well as its signicant contribution to the theory regarding the "Flamenco Guitar" have been guaranteed by two of their main references as Paco de Lucía and Enrique de Melchor:

Thank you José. Flamenco music was feeling the need of having such a book”. Paco de Lucía

"The book is of great importance because it proves the richness of flamenco regarding music and it allows those people who do not have previous experiences to know, feel or interpret the Flamenco music to get involved and be introduced in this wonderful music and its variety of styles in an appropriate manner", Enrique de Melchor.

About the Author

José Sabán Ruiz, 53 years old, was born in Córdoba, Spain. He is a Doctor and Professor of Medicine, as well as the coordinator of a Research Project on the Prevention of Coronary Disease. He has received Outstanding Achievement Award upon Graduating. Sabán is a poet, and he has published four works: Directo al corazón, Un puñado de sentimientos, Versos robados, Desvíos incontrolados.

He is a die-hard guitar lover and has been trained at alternative music schools, as well as being self-taught. He loves both Jazz and Blues, and has had, for over a decade, the particular hobby of “diving” into Flamenco in the attempts of working out the intricacies of its musical harmony. For years, José Sabán Ruiz has laboured over dozens of books, looking for simple explanations for the fundamentals of such a complex music style as Flamenco. As a member of Casa de Andalucía of Soto del Real (Madrid), he couldn’t turn down the offer to teach just such a course in the year 2000. Due to insistence on behalf of his students and, more importantly, of the lack of published texts about it, Sabán made the decision, eight years later, to write and publish just such a book. The author has faced this challenge with the intention of transmitting his “notes” to a mixed group of readers in the hopes of solving some of their questions, attempting to resolve each new doubt that arises once the previous one has been explained and understood. “It is always better to have doubts than to know nothing”.
