About the Author

Since 1947 Anita Smith has enjoyed living in St. Johnsville where she and her husband, Fred, were retail merchants for over 40 years.

The people from this area are very supportive and make St.Johnsville a friendly and welcoming community, with a great quality of life. She visited with customers to learn more area history. Their stories and memories made history fascinating, a glimpse into the past of St.Johnsville, and a part of this book.

Here is a wealth of early American history. The Mohawk valley was the warpath to America's destiny, and the past lives here with the present at Fort Klock; Nellis Tavern; Palatine Church, and the Fort Zimmerman site. No part of the United States has more significance than this Mohawk Valley water level route from the Hudson to the Great Lakes.

Anita Smith has devoted a lifetime of promoting and preserving the Mohawk Valley heritage in both professional and volunteer arenas. Her contributions are many as former Montgomery County Historian, and president of the New York State County Historian's organization, and as a present Village and Town of St.Johnsville Historian.

The Mohawk Valley heritage Corridor honored her in 2003 as the Montgomery County Heritage Hero for her achievements in promoting heritage and history. In addition she is a trustee and member of the Fort Klock Historic Restoration; founding trustee and member at Nellis Tavern; Palatine Church Society member, and the Association of Public Historians of New York State.

She enjoys teaching students local history, and encourages them to preserve the past for the future.
