About the Book

The book starts with the now standard prologue, and begins with the diving in Rhode Island, which is the closest place accessible to my residence at the time, White Plains, N.Y. My diving was initially in the R.I. area, and expanded to all areas of the Caribbean, and I soon went to the Red Sea out of Israel, and rather soon expanded to Saudi Arabia and Egypt in the same Red Sea. From there I went to the Western end of the Mediterranean and later to the Eastern end at Djerba Tunisia, also courtesy of Club Med. From there I went to the Seychelles, off the Eastern coast of Africa, and to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. In between there was Cabo, San Lucas, Lombok, and the Northern part of the Phillipines (about 30 years after the end of WWII).

As those of you have dived know, diving can be expensive, air travel, excess baggage charges, equipment charges, etc. Accordingly, I have kept several jobs, about four University teaching positions, a number of years with IBM, then work in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The work I did before (caddying, newspaper delivery, railhead and lumberyard) was insufficient to support a diving career.

I also developed an underwater movie and a web site (undersealife.net) also used in marketing this book.

But most importantly, I met a number of very interesting people in creating this book.

About the Author

In my early years I caddied and delivered newspapers. Shortly after Peal Harbor, I worked at a railhead and a lumberyard. Very shortly thereafter, I volunteered for the US Navy, and soon after some V-12 and Midshipmen training, went to San Francisco, and then to a LCT as an executive officer, and soon thereafter as skipper of the LCT. From there I used the GI Bill to get the necessary educational training to teach in a couple of colleges. From the second one I transferred to IBM to work initially in the divisional market research department.

Later I went to Egypt and served in the Department of State. Was there at the time Sharm El Sheik was devastated.

Took extended trips starting in the Red Sea, then the Mediterranean, then Seychelles, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and back to Baha Penninsula at Cabo San Lucas, to dive with my youngest daughter, Karla.
