About the Book

The aim of this book is to outline where we are, as Black British community, with particular regard to education, crime and our social standing. In order to do this we must first understand where we are coming from, and how we came to be here. To this end, the book outlines the West Indian journey to England, beginning with slavery and putting it into a modern day context, with particular reference to the author's Jamaican origin, and his historical link to England.

This book draws heavily on the author's personal experiences, as a Black man, born in the UK, in the Fifties of Jamaican parentage. Where the author feels it appropriate, he draws on his own experience, in the honest belief that it is a microcosm of the wider problems affecting the Black community. Included in the book is debate about; education, crime, the 'Criminal Justice system', the family, mental health, leadership and business.

It is because the author feels so passionate about his community and wider society that he feels the need to comment and effectively air and share his experiences. He does this by trying to challenge you, confront you, inform you and even woo you. The author uses anthology throughout the book; in order to convey short, sharp and succinct messages, in a way that it will have impact and verve. The book culminates with a set of proposals on the way forward, which is hoped, will act as a catalyst for change.

About the Author

My parents arrived in the United Kingdom in 1954, some nine years after the cessation of the Second World War. The only assets they had were youth, integrity and an honest belief in the virtues of hard work. I was educated at in an inner-London comprehensive school, which I left with only a few poorly graded CSEs. In brief, I have been through the complete United Kingdom education system and come out the other end with a story to tell that may assist others. I bring a level of subjectivity to issues that can only really be acquired by someone who has been through the system and, in doing so, gained first hand experience. Having said this, I have objectively analysed situations, which affect us as a wider community.

My career to date spans across 26 years of Public Sector service. In that time I have gained much experience and knowledge surrounding not only Public Sector issues, but also other business and social, issues. I have been involved in the property business for over 10 years now and, as such have empirical knowledge of the economic and social problems besetting the Black community. Notwithstanding this, the main skill that I bring to this book is my ability to examine and evaluate a situation, and to report on weaknesses, along with drafting proposals where possible. Having been trained to write reports for organisations about their systems of internal control, I have decided to use this skill to examine and evaluate where we are now as a community. I am also a Co-opted Foundation Governor within a thriving inner-city school as well as a Consultant to the Trustee Board of a church. I possess an MBA along with other accountancy and audit qualifications.
