“Sh-h-h-h-h !!” Charolette insisted as she put her index finger up to her lips and pushed air out of her mouth with a great deal of force. She stared down at the two lottery tickets in front of her and listened intently as the man on the television read each and every number out loud.
“Our first number for the evening is 25!” the announcer said with a great deal of enthusiasm.
Charolette held her breath as she stared down at her two lottery tickets. She was delighted when she saw that this was her first number too.
“14!” came the second number, followed by a long pause. “7” came the third number from the nice looking man on the television.
A tiny smile presented itself upon Charolette’s face when she realized that she now had three numbers in a row. She was trying very hard to control herself. She couldn’t tell anyone how, but she knew in her heart that tonight was the
night that her whole world would change.
“32!”
Charolette let out a small scream as she realized that she was only two numbers away from winning the state lottery. Charolette looked around the room and was very glad that she had invited her sister, and two of her best
friends to come to her home to watch this program with her. She knew that she would not have been able to watch this alone.
“Good for you!” shouted Rhea who was sitting on the edge of the couch with both her legs, both arms, and all her fingers crossed for Charolette. “Two more, two more!” she
chanted.
“41!” yelled the announcer as if he were calling Bingo.
“Oh my goodness!” screamed Haley who was about to cry. “I think you’re going to win this!”
“Hush now!” Charolette warned her sister as she waved her hands in the air. “I want to hear the last number!” Charolette was starting to break out in a slight sweat. She checked her ticket again and sighed. Even if she didn’t
match any more numbers, she would still walk away with a little bit of money.
The announcer, in all his glory and wisdom, decided to go to a commercial before giving out the last, and most important, number of the evening. “We’ll be ri-i-i-i-ight back!” he said while flashing a perfect talk-show-host
smile.
Charolette collapsed in a heap on the floor. She just couldn’t take it anymore. “What will I do if I really win this?” she asked no one in particular.
Haley piped up. “You have a loving and very caring little sister who has loved you your whole entire life! You share it with me!” she laughed as she sat on the floor beside
Charolette.
“And I have been your best friend for, well, forever is all!” shouted Brooklyn who was sitting on the edge of her seat. Brooklyn was also feeling the stress in the room. She
immediately shoved a beautifully manicured nail into her mouth and started nibbling at the end – a habit that she had not done in years.
“Don’t forget about me, Charlie!” commanded Rhea. “We’ve known each other since Grade 3, and have been best friends since Grade 7!”
“Okay, okay!” laughed Charolette. “I get the point. You ALL get something if I win.” Charolette heard music coming from the TV and quickly noticed that the commercial had
ended. She rolled over and sat up again with her tickets held tight in her hand. “Okay now everyone, quiet!”
“Welcome back to our program”, said the announcer with a smirk on his handsome face. “Are you ready to continue?” The announcer placed his hand to his ear as if he was actually waiting to hear a response.
“Yes!” shouted Charolette to the television screen. “Get on with it already!” She was kneeling on the ground and moving her upper body up and down in anticipation of the
last number.
“Okay then”, the announcer said as he flashed about a hundred large white teeth. “On with the show!”
“Oh, this is going to be terrible if I don’t win!” whimpered Charolette. She stared at the TV as she watched all the little white balls with the tiny black numbers, bounce around inside the plastic see-through container. All of a
sudden she lost all hope.
Haley noticed that Charolette’s mood had dropped. “It’s going to be alright, sis”, encouraged Haley. “If he will just get on with it, we will know for sure if you won or not!”
she shouted at the television screen.
“Our last number for the evening, and a chance to win $8 million dollars is…..” the announcer said trying to lengthen the suspense.
