About the Book

The Doc Newman Story is a true story of patriotism in a time of war and service to others in a time of peace. Marine Corps Medic Don Newman received a Purple Heart for wounds he received while tending to fellow marines during World War II. This is a story of the war as seen through the first hand account of a Marine Corp Medic.

After the war, he returned home to marry and attend medical school. His far reaching medical career included helping to found ABC (Aid to Baja California) where he traveled forty times to Mexico with medical supplies and services for those in need. Looking to his own community, he opened a free medical clinic in East Los Angeles. He served twice as the Volunteer Medical Director for the Boy Scout Jamboree while serving as a Scoutmaster. This is a story of a doctor who reaches out to those who are less fortunate.

Dr. Newman's influence spread throughout the educational community. He is the only Los Angeles Unified School District school board member to serve concurrently as both President of that board and also as President of the Los Angeles County Board of Trustees. He was a founder of the Educational Congress of California along with State Superintendent of Public Instruction Wilson Riles. This is a story of one of California's educational leaders.

Dr. Newman strongly believed in community service. He was the Chairman of both the El Sereno's Bicentennial Committee and the Wilson High School Advisory Council. This is a story of community involvement.

Dr. Newman died at a relatively young age. At his memorial program at Wilson High School, Tom Bradley, then Mayor of the City of Los Angeles, stated: "I think most of all, among the qualities that Don Newman had, the quality for love for his fellow man stands above all else."
