About the Book
The German Empire had fallen and Allied Armies had moved in - dangerous time fraught with fear, hunger and hardship. The country was now returning to its old patterns with its strict organizations and social classes, where people found their own secure little niche.
It would seem natural for Inge to seek her little comfortable corner after experiencing the turmoil: But no!
She and her husband, Egon, wanted freedom from restrictions, freedom to develop as individuals in whatever direction fate would take them. Living should be an adventure.
With little money Inge, husband Egon, and three daughters emigrated to Canada. The language and whole culture were unfamiliar. Life brought Inge a full measure of hardships - deserted by husband; single parent; untrained nurse; poverty; pioneering on subsistence backwoods farm - but also happy events. Inge's friendly "Journal style" of narrating intimately involves the reader in her surprising and often exciting day to day adventures. Readers will be inspired by her buoyant, indomitable spirit: her determination to overcome so many learning experiences, mistakes and failures, but always approached with enthusiasm. Readers will meet the many weird and wonderful people along the way. It is truly an adventure.
