About the Book

Highland Haven follows Sam Jackson on his leap into the unknown by applying for a mystery job vacancy. This takes him to one of the most beautiful yet rugged regions of Europe; the Scottish Highlands. His task is to convert the ambition of a wealthy entrepreneur into the reality of creating a unique self supporting community in this otherwise barren land.

Whilst this fictional scenario, set in an actual Scottish glen, introduces new social and political ideas, the prime theme is punctuated by diverse dramas created by climatic conditions; much skulduggery; and international smuggling. Additional colour to the narrative is provided by well informed word excursions by land, sea, and air, through and over this fascinating region. A real taste is gained of the unique character of life in this harsh, yet stunning terrain.

This story has something for everyone: armchair tourists; crime and mystery buffs; environmentalists; even budding engineers and managers. An unusual composition with much intrigue and excitement.

About the Author

The author, Maurice Duffill, now in his seventies, makes full use of his wide experience of engineering, flying, and the hospitality trade, to introduce the reader to the enchantment of a Scottish Highland glen. Although born an Englishman (not his doing), he together with his ever-loving wife, Lilian, lived for many years in an isolated timber cottage in the Highland Region. Here he discovered the fascination of the topography; the flora and fauna; and the dramatic nature of the climate; as well as the unique lifestyle of the sometimes Gaelic-speaking Scot. In his writings he manages to draw upon his varied experiences gained from delving into many aspects of industry and, not only travelling throughout the world, but living and working in a variety of countries. As a result he has developed a philosophy of life which appears to link everything Ð from the magnitude of the cosmos to the miniscule sub-atomic particle; from the inanimate through the living to the spiritual world. Now resident in an isolated valley in NSW, Australia, he and Lilian think of the Scottish Highlands as being ÔhomeÕ.
