The last lightening strike, being so close, woke me up with a start. I still barely could breathe, let alone yell for help. I had no idea how long I had been unconscious, but it was still night and storming. The thunder was so loud, but I thought I heard something. I thought it was my imagination. There was no one here but me and my scared horse. Perhaps that was what I heard. I strained to listen, but I couldn't hear it any longer. "Chestnut," I whispered. No use, even if he did hear me, what was he going to do? This was so frustrating! Well, I wasn't going to just give up. With all my will and little strength, I tried to move once more. Maybe with the dirt under me loosening I could slide out. So, I pushed against the tree limb on top of me with whatever strength I could. I couldn't help it, but I started to cry from the pain and I suppose frustration, too. The darn thing wouldn't budge and I didn't move either by my pushing. I tried to scream in anger, but a tiny yelp was all I could muster. Then from behind me came a noise, the way my luck had been going, it was probably a wild animal ready to pounce and finish me off. "Stephanie, where are you, can you hear me," came Brad's voice. Brad was here? Could I be hallucinating? No, no couldn't be. "Help me," I strained. "Brad, I'm here." Please God, help me, and let him hear me.

Stephanie encounters problems and dangers at every turn. She is determined to follow her heart and fulfill her uncle’s wishes to live out her life in Wyoming. Will her dreams be her undoing? Or will the dreams come true in a horrifying way?

Derene Scheeler loves the Old West and the love of a protective man. She lives with her husband, Michael, their daughter, and two exchange student sons in eastern Pennsylvania. Scheeler is currently writing Finally Free, a sequel to Follow Your Heart.
