Omani keeps looking straight ahead, not really interested in her surroundings. As they continue to walk Jim notices something strange. The further they walk into the cemetery the more he can see blue-violet sparks going back and forth between the two sisters. He starts to think it’s a figment of his imagination and shakes his head. When he looks up, it does it again, but this time stronger.
“Guys,” Jim says.
Amber looks back with a finger on her lips to indicate to Jim to be quiet. He stays quiet for just a few seconds, until the sparks start to go again.
“Guys!” he says again, but a little more firmly.
Amber turns back again.
“Don’t you see it?” he asks in a loud whisper.
Amber frowns. Jim steps back a little bit, not knowing what to think of what he is seeing. The sisters keep walking together in silence, not aware of anything.
“It’s just that we worked so hard and now I feel like it was for nothing. Is it the hair? The face? What? Why didn’t they like us?” Omani says, staring at the ground.
Amber grabs Omani by the arm to stop her. Then she grabs Omani’s face and looks directly into her eyes.
“Listen to me. We don’t know what they think yet. I think you’re settling for the worst-case scenario. Agents are like that. They appear that they don’t like you when they really do. It’s all part of the game.
You remember what happened to Liz, right?” Amber asks.
Suddenly the light goes on for Omani.
“Yeah. You’re right. They treated her the same way, and look at her now. Thanks, Amber. I couldn’t have asked for a better sister,” Omani says, starting to look around suspiciously. “Do you hear that?”
“Yeah, it’s like rustling leaves,” Amber says.
“But there are no leaves here,” Omani says.
The sisters quietly look around. Jim is standing some distance from them with a look of horror on his face.
“Jim, are you okay?” Omani asks.
Jim isn’t looking at either sister. Instead he seems to be looking past them as though his sight is fixed on something else. He starts to gasp, trying to say something, but no words come out. Finally, he resorts to lifting his right hand to a ninety-degree angle and pointing past the sisters.
“Jim?” Omani asks, concerned.
He gasps louder.
“What is that?” he exclaims.
