In surgery, he stood over her, stethoscope about his neck; protocol observed everything set in place in preparation for the operation. “You may want to read this”, the doctor said, “Think its someone wishing you well”. Weakly, she reached out and collected the white envelop from him and opened it slowly. Mrs. Martha Seymour smiled and clutched Omoyeni’s letter to her bosom. “Go ahead now doc. everything’s going to be fine now”, she said with renewed vigor, and winking conspiratorially at the doctor said: “Female intuition”. Walter Filmore waited patiently at the departure lounge with his wife and two kids. He had perfected plans to spend two weeks in Kenya. He had also quit his job and gotten a new one. Lyon Hampstead and his wife, Bella read Omoyeni ’s letter on their small kitchen table with Bella ’s new pet a white poodle staring curiously at them. “That boy …. ”, Lyon commented

About the Book
Omoyeni Ayekooto was born and raised in a small village in Africa—the last of four children and the only son. From of the age of seven, he remembers that he is the happiest boy in the whole world building castles and birdhouses from the mud. This is a carefree time for Omoyeni and his friends as they learn about their people’s ways from both their parents and the trusted villagers.
As Omoyeni grows physically, he also grows emotionally as he experiences the intricacies of life—complex relationships with his parents and sisters, lasting friendships, the opposite sex, marriage, and finally, death. Omoyeni becomes curious about the world outside his small village; he understands that diligence, hard work, and resolve will make more opportunities for him as will traveling to the “white man’s land” away from Africa.
Sing Me a Dirge follows Omoyeni as he comes of age and is torn between opportunity in Europe and the United States, and the lure and memories of village life in Africa.
About the Author
Dotun Olufokunbi was born, raised, and educated in Ilesa, Osun, a state of southwestern Nigeria. He is a student of creative writing and is an anointed Christian Witness of Jehovah.
