One of the biblical poems, which inspired Reverend Claiborne Brown, Jr., to write The Book of Love Towards God, was “I Asked the Lord Why?” This poem was written in memory of Jessamyn Johnson. Reverend Brown had just accepted his calling into the ministry, and when the passing of his young cousin, Jessamyn , took him and the family by surprise; He knew the Lord was going to test him, but he had no idea that it would be during this time and so early after accepting his calling in the ministry. Reverend Brown put himself in the place of the parents and began to ask the Lord questions which led to the inspiring poem, “I Asked the Lord Why?”
I asked the Lord why,
A young baby has to die;
I asked the Lord why,
The mother and father have to stand at the coffin with tears in their eyes.
Do you love us Lord?
I asked the question over and over again. He answered and said, “I love you, I love you till the end.”
I asked the Lord why,
A man would beat his wife and children are sleeping in the streets. He answered and said, “Trust me my child and keep your faith in me.” I asked the Lord why, there is so much suffering and so much pain. Lord, do you hear us when we pray, or are we praying in vain?
I asked the Lord why, mothers against daughters and fathers against sons. But Lord, You said in your word this time will surely come.
I asked the Lord why, people stretch the truth and tell lies. He answered and said, “My child this has been going on since the beginning of time.”
I asked the Lord why, before I could get it out. He said, “Listen and behold the words that cometh out of my mouth.” He said, “I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.” He said, “Why starts and ends with me.” He said, “Your way is not my way and your thoughts are not my thoughts, so take these words that I give you as you take your daily walk.”
I asked the Lord why, He answered me when He heard my cry.
Reverend Brown knows that a lot of people have questions about death, and this is why the Lord blessed him with the poem, “I Asked the Lord Why?” This was an experience he had faced himself and can sympathize with others might have to ask the Lord why. Reverend Brown hopes that all of the poems within this inspirational book will encourage others who need comfort and love.
