One day, a Nazi soldier visited Esther and Ira’s school. He carried a scroll with names on it. All of the names on the scroll were of Jewish children, including Esther’s name and her brother Ira’s. When the Nazi soldier shouted their names they stepped forward. He pinned yellow stars on them and on each of the other Jewish children on the list. Esther recognized the star right away. It was the Star of David. It was the star on her Synagogue and the star of her religion. Only, it was different than the star she had known. This star looked sad and it had the word, “Jude” sewed across it. The word, “Jude” meant that all these children were Jewish and now for some reason every one needed to know.

About the Book
A young child tells the story of how her Grandmother, Esther Highman, survived World War II. Esther is a young Jewish girl, living in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power. Esther and her brother, Ira are removed from their school. They are not allowed to play with other children and their family is given a curfew. People in their town begin to turn on them. Synagogues and Jewish owned stores are set to flames. Jewish people are being captured and taken away. Esther and her family try to escape Nazi capture by hiding in their crawl space and in an abandoned barn. Esther and her family are finally captured and taken to Auschwitz Concentration Camp, in Poland. While at the camp, Esther is separated from her family. She does not know if they are alive. She must learn to survive on her own.
