She was almost to the edge of the cliff so she could look out at the water when she heard her name called out. She was startled. “Zandi” someone screamed again. She recognized the voice. She froze. He came towards her. She looked straight at him and tried to conceal her fear. She told herself, “stare him down, and don’t let him see you are afraid.” “I warned you. I told you I would kill you if you said a word.” He moved closer. In his deep raspy voice he said, “You are as good as dead now.” He came closer. This time she backed up. He was getting too close. The sun went behind a cloud and the sky seemed to darken. She was trembling all over. It was all she could do to hold herself together. By now they were both standing close to the edge of the 700 foot drop to the lake.

Born in 1993, Nick T. Byrd lives with his parents and three younger sisters in Page, Arizona. Nick enjoys writing and has been writing plays, stories, and music since he was seven years old. With his third and final installment, Zandi’s Treasure: The Pact, he completes the Zandi’s Treasure series.
