About the Book
"Hawkeye Greats, By the Numbers features prominent Hawkeye football and men’s basketball players by their jersey numbers, and it’s bound to be a hit with Hawkeye fans as they recall all the fine players in Iowa football and men’s basketball history who wore those numbers." - Ron Gonder "I think it’s marvelous how you are arranging Hawkeye Greats, By the Numbers. So often books in this genre are arranged by a ranking with no historical significance, and I’m glad to see a book with a truly unique approach.” - University of Iowa Press
About the Author
Lyle Hammes Lyle Hammes is a native of Sigourney, Iowa. He became a Hawkeye fan early in life by spending many evenings and Saturday afternoons watching games with his father. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1996 with a degree in Civil Engineering and is currently a Professional Engineer employed by the City of Ames, IA. He and his wife, Phebe, have two children. Despite now living in "Cyclone Country", he holds true to the black and gold more than ever. He's missed only one game in Kinnick Stadium since 1999 and eagerly awaits each new season. Research for this book began in 2005 when he received a number of old Iowa football and basketball rosters. He has since teamed up with Neal Rozendaal and Kevin Hammes to produce "Hawkeye Greats, By the Numbers" - a true Hawkeye roster for the ages. Neal Rozendaal Neal Rozendaal was born in Grinnell, Iowa, in 1979. He was named a National Merit Scholar as a senior at Lynnville-Sully High School in 1998. He then attended the University of Iowa, where he graduated in 2002 with degrees in statistics, economics, and political science. Neal credits his father for getting him hooked on the Hawkeyes at a very young age. Neal has a keen interest in Hawkeye football history and is a collector of vintage Hawkeye memorabilia. Two of his most prized possessions are an autograph from Iowa's Heisman Trophy winner, Nile Kinnick, and a game program from Iowa's 10-7 victory over Notre Dame in 1921. Neal is currently an economist for the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Washington, D.C. He resides in Alexandria, Virginia. Kevin Hammes Kevin Hammes obtained his undergraduate degree from Northeast Missouri State University and later completed studies at Southeast Missouri State University with a Masters Degree in Human Services Administration. He currently resides in Scott City, Missouri, with his wife and three children. Kevin's favorite Hawkeye memory was when Iowa upset Nebraska in the 1981 Rose Bowl season. Kevin's interests include running, watching Hawkeye football and wrestling, and enjoying the outdoors.
