FROM THE CRACK HOUSE TO THE SCHOOL
When the crack Cocaine epidemic first hit the people living in Oakland during the 1970’s, I had no idea that it would have an adverse affect on anyone directly or indirectly linked to our family or anyone else we personally knew and grew up with. More specifically, since our parents taught my sisters, brothers and me such strong family values, the importance of taking care of ourselves; as well as, the importance of being independent; who knew that this drug thing would catch us all off guard, especially my baby sister Cabbeba. Now ether, all by itself was a very strong opiate used by doctors during major surgical procedures to put a person to sleep; and, if you ever had an operation you would know and understand that one of the downsides of allowing medical professionals to put you to sleep using ether was the risk of death. However, I can only imagine what would happen when ether was combined with Cocaine. But what I clearly understand is that it had to have become an even more deadly concoction. Further, I was somewhat familiar with ether because I had undergone a major operation a few years earlier. And I still have a strong memory of how I felt when I woke up after my operation and of how sluggish I was.

About the Book
A Journey Back in Time presents a collection of thirteen stories about love, hate, greed, redemption, freedom, peace, loneliness, the loss of a loved one, interracial relationships, and acceptance. Each story is relevant to the experiences of African Americans from as far back as the 1860s through the present day. These stories emerged through the research of author Vildred C. Tucker-Dawson into her family history. She discovered that her ancestors had a unique way to allow future generations to connect with the past—through these stories, handed down from generation to generation. Several of the short stories are based upon accounts told by the author’s elders of her great-grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Pugh-Scott, whom she never met. Sarah and her son, who were both of a mixed racial background, faced challenges throughout their lives that did not prevent them from striving for better lives for their families. Presenting real perspective in the form of fiction, A Journey Back in Time offers food for thought to both youth and adults on African American experiences and history.
About the Author
A college graduate, Vildred Tucker-Dawson lives and works in California. As a child she lived the Lower Bottoms, Oakland, California; in high school, her love of writing served as an escape from the real world. This is her first book.
