A saying, originated during World War I, was to the effect that there are no atheists in foxholes. An atheist is one who has already made his decision against God and does unequivocally deny Him. There was once a doubter who was beginning to wonder if perhaps he was an atheist and no one seemed interested in trying to increase his faith. He met the small town’s clergyman on the street one day and asked, “Brother Jones, who made the earth?” Brother Jones knew there was more coming, but he smiled and said, “God did.” “How do you know? Did you see him making it?” “No,” said Brother Jones, “but it’s written here in this Bible.” The doubter put a hand to his weary brow. “Why should I believe you? Did you see it being written? I just don’t know…. I see the evidence of an assembling of nature, but things could have just fallen into place.” Brother Jones looked at the watch on the doubter’s wrist. “Who made your watch?” he asked. “The Elgin Watch company.” “How do you know?” Brother Jones asked. “It’s written on the back, see?” and he handed Brother Jones the watch. “Why should I believe you? Did you see it being written there? If not, I won’t believe it’s an Elgin!” The doubter began to smile as he was beginning to understand the parallelism. The clergyman opened the back of the watch and continued to say, “I don’t know…” Then, with a twinkle in his eye, “I think this intricate mechanism, with all these little wheels, just fell into place and started moving.” Sometimes it seems that “For multitudes who call themselves Christians, religion is no more than an agreeable sentiment and Calvary a bit of grim and pleasing pageantry.” (Costen J. About the Book
Esther B. King was born in 1909, and has been witness to many changes in the world. She lived through two world wars, the great depression, several other wars such as the Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and experienced new inventions in technology and the dawn of space exploration. She also has suffered many losses in her life such as the loss of her parents, her husband, her oldest son, her vision, and her home. Through all this Esther has managed to keep her faith in God. This book, which is really a collection of some of her newspaper articles written for a local newspaper column, shares her philosophy of life that is based upon her belief in God and the moral lessons taught in the Bible. This book is an easy read because of the brevity of the articles, and her writing is laced with Southern United States colloquialisms and down-home common sense. If you have little time to study, but want to become more familiar with the scriptures, then this is a perfect book for you!
About the Author
Esther King loved to read and to write. Unfortunately, she lost her sight many years ago, and she can no longer do either one. Although she will never see this book, the contents, of which she wrote long ago in her newspaper column, are still relevant today.
