Long into the winter, Farmer Malachi heard a noise. He looked out he sliding door toward the barn. “Well, I’ll be! Look at this, Farmer Joe!” Farmer Malachi said. Farmer Joe came over and looked out the door. The animals were square- dancing in the barn yard! “Practicing for next year!” Farmer Joe said. They both watched in silence for a few moments. “I would say that you are happy to see that,” Farmer Joe said. “I wouldn’t change a thing! I have a feeling that this winter is not going to be as long and cold after all! Things like this sure does warm this old cold heart of mine!” Farmer Malachi said.

Life has grown dull for the animals on Farmer Joe’s farm. Dudley the mule loves the new quiet life he has with his wife, Daisy, but he’s ready for some excitement. Dudley asks Farmer Joe if they can have a small party to liven things up at the farm. Farmer Joe thinks it’s a great idea, so Dudley and his friends meet under the tree by the fence to plan. They share silly stories and heartfelt memories, and Dudley notices how everyone’s eyes are sparkling with energy. Maybe, Dudley thinks, they should have a really big party to celebrate life on the farm—a Grand Harvest Ball! Farmer Joe and Dudley invite neighbors and other animal friends to the get-together. There’s lots of good food, games, and even square-dancing.
