The planes came upon us out of nowhere. The guns were firing. My dog ears were screaming from the sounds. What is this? Bullets were whizzing everywhere. Everything had been perfectly calm and now it was chaos. People were racing for cover. I was stunned. I could not move, I was so scared. What is happening? The planes were droning overhead, flashes of light streaking the sky as the guns cracked the night stillness. I could smell the fear in the air. Something had gone terribly wrong. I could not sight my Master or Mistress in the smoke of the gunfire. I felt terribly alone. As I gasp for some air, knowing I must do something, but unclear as to what I should do or where I should go, a shudder wracked my whole body. Suddenly, I awoke. I had been napping. I thought, Oh I was only dreaming, but then the wind whispered one word to me: War.

About the Book
Nothing but a little waif of a dog from the Crow Reservation in a dog eat dog world, Cassie wants to make a difference. She can't play soccer, she can't roll over and play dead, she can't even speak. What can she do? She's caught salmon in Alaska's streams, she's gone to highschool for four years, she's travelled the United States, she's been a sidekick in her master's flying projects. She has watched all the dog movies and seen all they can do, but she is hoping for her own adventure...to be daring, dauntless, bold…to be a hero in her own right.
About the Author
Lorna Henze is a Literary Major from Rocky Mtn. College in Billings Mt. She enjoys working with Native Americans and has lived on five reservations. She was inspired to write the Cassie stories while taking a creative writing class at Rocky. She comes from four generations of English teachers, and has taught Language Arts in both Alaska and Montana. She currently lives in Billings, Mt.
