During those two seasons, there may have been teams with more talent, but no other teams possessed the heart and desire of the Mustangs. Those two unbelievable years belonged to Downers Grove South. It was their time; not because of their success but because of what they symbolized. They were living evidence of the extraordinary things that are possible when a group of people commit themselves to a common goal. During that fleeting time, they elevated themselves above just being successful runners. They were something greater: something that one may only get to see once in a lifetime. They were the true embodiment of courage and hope; of loyalty and camaraderie; of joy and pain; of the elation of success and the heartbreak of defeat. They were legendary. These two teams truly were a Cinderella story. Going from obscurity to greatness is something that is not often achieved, but this special group of individuals was able to make it happen. Those that had the chance to be a part of that great experience were lucky. Everyone that was involved still looks back and can draw motivation from that incredible ride they all shared. Those teams were living of proof of the old adage: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will still land amongst the stars.”

About the Book
In the spring of 2005 a group of men began a journey that lasted for a year and a half, covered thousands of miles, and would change their lives forever. Over the course of two seasons, the cross country team at Downers Grove South High School rose from obscurity to one of the most formidable teams in the state, capturing the hearts and minds of athletes around the state with their courageous effort. Together they would go on a fantastic ride, experiencing unprecedented success and enduring heart breaking failure. This is not just a sports story. This is a story about brotherhood and overcoming impossible odds to achieve greatness. Legends of the Fall tells a story of what is possible when people put their minds to a common goal. At the end of it all, the men of Downers South would be forever remembered as legends for their courage, fortitude, but, most of all, for how they inspired so many with their amazing story.
About the Author
Devon Kelly is a college student living in Bloomington, Illinois. He is the same Devon from the story. After graduating college he will be seeking employment as a high school social studies teacher. He has done extensive writing in pursuit of his degree which has developed his skills as a writer. About a year and a half ago he undertook this project to preserve the memory of this incredible experience for everyone involved and serve as inspiration for others. His future writing plans include writing a history of his mother and father’s families.
