Jeremiah’s room is finally finished. I’m waiting on Jan and her clan to get here. Michael has kept what we’ve done to the room a secret. And tonight everyone will get to see the finishing touches.
I’ve spent all day baking and now I’m cooking dinner for all of us. Jan and Joseph, as well as their two children will be coming. Mrs. Cortez will be joining us also, as well as Michael, Sabrina, and their three boys.
The real reason behind the cooking and baking is the completion of the adoption of the three boys. Michael and Sabrina are officially Quincy, Warren, and Japer’s parents.
I rented a six-seater dinette set from the rental shop, and had the florist deliver a bouquet of flowers for the center piece. I have placed the sodas in a cooler on ice. All is ready, even me.
I’m wearing a jumpsuit, olive green in color, with short sleeves and a high waist that I’ve wrapped with a multicolored scarf. My hair is pulled back with a banana clip and is cascading down my back like a mane. I’ve dressed Jeremiah in a navy blue baby short set with a two-toned blue shirt, navy blue socks, and his first pair of baby shoes that are white. He looks so handsome and just as I was reaching for the camera that I keep in his room hanging from his crib, the doorbell rang.
The first person I saw as I opened the door was Mrs. Cortez. Then there was Sabrina, the boys and the men too followed, as they marched into the apartment in a single file line.
“Hello everybody.” I said as I moved out of the way.
“Where is my Little Man?” Mrs. Cortez asked looking around.
“He’s in his room.” I answered. “I’ll go get him.”
“I’ll get him, I know my way around.” Mrs. Cortez said then headed to Jeremiah’s room.
“Oh my God.” She exclaimed after she stepped into his room. “Janice, you need to see this.” Mrs. Cortez yelled from Jeremiah’s bedroom.
Jan and Sabrina walked to Jeremiah’s bedroom, both gasped as they looked around his room.
The walls were pale blue with navy baseboards. At the top of the wall all around the room were blocks in pastel colors of yellow, green, red, and orange, that had numbers and letters of the alphabet on them. To the left on the wall was a boat with the sea lapping at its side whose sails were blue and white. A big bay window is straight ahead and hanging from it were curtains blue in color with white valances. Below the window was a window seat with padded cushions in blocks of pastel colors. The wall to the right had frames of various shapes and sizes in navy blue posting pictures of Jeremiah. Below the framed pictures stood a white rocker with two small tables, one on each side, that was also white, sporting lamps which shades were light blue. His crib is white and is off centered being closer to the left wall, with its head facing the window. Its skirt had the same pastel colors as the blocks and so does the trimming on his blankets. Hanging above the crib was a mobile station with an airplane as its center piece and balls of different colors surrounding it. At the foot of the crib stood a trunk with a baseball, bat, and mitt drawn on it with Jeremiah’s name in block letters across the top.
“Jos, wow, this is beautiful. Michael did a wonderful job.” Jan exclaimed.
“I told Michael the look I wanted and he came up with the ideas for the walls. I picked up the picture frames on my shopping spree and Michael painted them to match the colors. He painted the rocker also. The maintenance man bought it to me and asked if I could use it too. The end tables were the two speakers I inherited with the apartment.”
“Little Sis, you did well. I like the openness of the room and the colors.” Joseph said.
“Oh Michael, I love this, were you able to take pictures for your portfolio?” Sabrina asked as she walked around the room.
“Yes, Jos has the film, we used her camera. She promised to give me the ones I took of this room.” Michael answered his wife.
“Mom, get your Little Man, and let’s go into the living room. It’s time to feed the boys and sit down to enjoy each other’s company. I placed Jeremiah’s carrier next to your seat.”
“Jos, the table is set up for six, where are the boys going to eat?” Sabrina asked.
“I set the smaller table in the nook for four. The boys will eat there, I hope you guys don’t mind.” I said looking from Sabrina to Jan.
“Of course not, that was a good idea.” Sabrina said.
“Sabrina, go and sit down. Mom and I will bring the food to the table.”
“I’ll help getting the boys settled down.” Jan cut in.
Dinner consisted of a rump roast baked with new potatoes, carrots, onions and celery, yellow rice, gravy, string beans with onions, yellow and red bell peppers, and rolls. Mom walked me through the baking of the rump roast, and the making of the rolls.
After mom blessed the meal, we started eating and the conversation was of course about our children.
“Sabrina, Michael,” I said as I stood up, “I would like to let both of you know how very proud of you both we are. It is a wonderful thing that you are doing. Congratulations on the completion of your adoption of those three handsome boys you’ve opened your home and hearts to.” I announced, and then raised my glass to them both.
“I agree with Jos, and I am also proud of you cuz and your lovely wife. I pray that you two are always blessed each day with what you need.” Joseph piped in as he too raised his glass.
“Thank you, both of you.” Sabrina said with a smile on her face. “
Now let me go check on the boys, Jasper can be rambunctious, and being the natural leader he is, will get the whole brood in trouble before they realize what he’s doing.” Sabrina said as she got up from the table and headed in the direction of the kitchen.
