"It smells like bread," said Sara. The girls hugged their grandmother. "Well," said Grandma, "it is bread. It's white bread. And now that you're here; the three of us can make some wheat bread." Grandma smiled at her granddaughters. "Would you like to make wheat bread?" she asked. "Sure," the girls replied. "Tell us the recipe and how we can help," said Emma. Grandma opened the cookbook to the wheat bread recipe. "Emma,” she said, "since you are the oldest, you read the recipe. Sara, you find the ingredients in the pantry." The girls got busy, Emma reading the recipe and Sara bringing out the supplies. "Wheat flour. Yeast. Salt. Butter," Emma said. "Sugar. Warm water or warm milk." Sara looked puzzled. "What does yeast do?" she asked. Grandma smiled as she explained. "Yeast is called a leavening agent, it causes the bread to rise. The warm water or milk will help activate the yeast. Activate means to start action. The yeast produces bubbles. The bubbles cause the bread to grow and expand. Do you see this white bread I made before you came? It's already starting to rise."

About the Book
Leora Sipp grew up on a farm in Ohio. There she learned to take care of animals, drive tractors and work with her four older brothers. Leora worked in the maintenance department at the local college for twenty three years, taught kindergarten in Ohio and pre-school in California. The idea for writing books came from the desire to share farm experiences with grandchildren and children all over the world. About the Author
Leora Janson Sipp was born on a farm in northeastern Ohio. She learned about the ‘sugar bush’ from helping the family produce maple syrup every year. She grew up driving horses, tractors and helping with the animals on the farm. Leora worked in the public and private schools teaching kindergarten and preschool. Leora feels that children need to learn about the ‘how to’ of farming activities.
