A SYNOPSIS OF LIFE Fifty, sixty, seventy years or more seems like a long time, but in the scheme of things, it is but the wink of an eye. To look back and remember the things of childhood when life was carefree brings back memories of playing for hours and wishing that you would grow up fast so that you could do the same things that the older children were doing. Then came the day when you looked at the opposite sex as more than someone to play and fight with. You began to develop and go through those self-conscious stages, stumbling all over yourself when that certain person said, “Hi, how are you today.” You seek for words but nothing comes but an awkward, “OK or just fine.” You get all red faced and wish that you could just disappear. Then the school years pass so quickly, what fun you had playing team sports or just watching them, trying to be as good as you thought you could be. During this time true love hits and no one else will do, for a while at least, until the next heartthrob came along. Not that you were fickle minded, but what the hay, why stay with just one when there are so many good lookers around. Then comes the day when the right Mr. or Miss Right comes along. One who captured your heart from the first time you looked at them. Awkwardly at first, then as time passes you realize that this is the person that you want to spend the rest of your life with. After taking your new found love home with you to meet your family you agree to get married and settle down. Then comes the day when you no longer are just playing house like you did as a child, you are now playing house for real with all of its heartaches and joys. When your first child is born, you think that no one in the world has ever had a child any finer than yours, both mom and dad are as proud as can be. Then your child begins their journey through life. This in turn brings back memories of your own childhood that you thought had been put to rest a long time ago. You follow their growth with the same interest that your folks had following yours. You both give your child the love and attention that you once had received. Their school years become yours all over again. Then before you realize it, it is their time to leave home and the cycle starts all over again. Through it all, you stand by your child Just as your folks had stood by you. One-day father time taps you on your shoulder and says, “Happy Birthday” you have reached your fiftieth, sixtieth, or seventieth birthday. Everyone wishes you a happy birthday and wish you many more joyous years ahead. However, in your heart you know that your time here on earth will soon come to an end and that soon you will join your parents in the life that comes after death. These thoughts sadden you for a while, then you reconcile yourself to the fact that this is the way things have to be and you smile with the contentment of having had a good and productive life and that it will soon be your time to leave this life behind. This is the way life has been since the beginning of mankind. God created us all and gave unto all their own number of years here on earth. We can neither add to that amount of years nor take away from it. Live life to glorify God and one day you will come to understand the whys and wherefores of our earthly existence.

About the Author
My name is Merrill A. Phillips. I was born and raised in Chatham, Massachusetts. After high school, I joined the Army Air Corps in 1944 and served during WWII as an aircraft mechanic. Discharged in October 1946, I went on to learn and work in the plumbing and heating trade. I was married in 1949 to my first wife, and we had three children. Divorced in 1962, I moved to New Hampshire in 1965 where I remarried and went into business for myself in the plumbing and heating trade. This marriage lasted eight years. I remarried again in 1976 and have been married for thirty-five years. We presently live in Barton, Missouri, a small town in the northwest part of the state, about eighteen miles from Memphis, Tennessee. God called me to write in 1988 while living in Arizona; two years later, I started writing and have been writing ever since. My writings are mostly inspirational, but have many sea stories and poems along with some children’s stories, many of which are based on personal experiences as a child. I have had some of my writings published in our local newspaper. Also, my church has printed one in the church bulletin each week for the last eight years. Many of my writings have been put on the Internet. A church group in southern India requested permission to translate my writings into their local language and use them in their classes. I am now eighty-five years and retired. I spend most of my days working with my writings and still enjoy writing and putting them together in book form in hopes of someday getting them published as I can afford it. My hope is that my writings will be of help to those who are searching for answers to life’s problems or at least lead them to where they can find the answers. Without a doubt, writing has been the greatest experience of my life, and I have spent many hours of putting on paper what God wants me to convey to others. Without the encouragement and understanding of my wife Nell, I would not have had the time I needed to devote to my calling.
