After Manny’s close call with Sal, he remembered his parents telling him he had very special skin, a protective skin. Mola’s skin contains a type of poison that when eaten can make sharks or any other creature sick. This is an adaptation (ad·ap·ta·tion).

About the Book
This is a storybook that gives ocean organisms, such as the mola mola, emotions and makes them more personable, so children can relate to them as individuals and therefore may become concerned about them and their ocean habitat. The book was written for a science education capstone project that educated young children, and thus future voters about the mola mola and its habitat. The book is for children in grades 2 through 4. The book was written in accordance with the California Life Science Standards for second through fourth grade. The book addresses the life cycle, adaptations, and food web interactions of a mola mola.
About the Author
Savannah Prince graduated from California State University, Monterey Bay, with a bachelor of science degree in marine and coastal ecology. She graduated from National University with a master of education degree in cross-cultural teaching. She currently teaches seventh grade life science. She lives in Imperial, California, with her family. Timothy Jasko attended State University of New York at Stony Brook where he studied Studio Art and Art History.
