“Mom, don’t go!” Claudia cried. Her mom hugged her.
“It’ll be okay,” she whispered. “I have to go.” Claudia let go of her mother and watched them slowly walk up the steps.
Silence again. Minutes dragged by. Finally, Chrissy said, “We have to find Lisa. She’s our only hope.” Claudia quietly agreed, and the two went up and outside.
Once out of the cabin, Chrissy started walking briskly toward the forest. She looked back and saw that Claudia was lagging behind. “I’m scared,” Claudia whispered.
“Don’t be,” Chrissy told her. Her necklace glowed purple, the air shimmered, and they were standing in sunlight. The tree-house and all the cabins gleamed perfectly, and Alexis, Thunder, and Lightning were prancing behind them.
Claudia looked at all this, swallowed, and said “Let’s do this.” Chrissy held the illusion until they were at the edge of the forest, then they were plunged into darkness.

Chrissy tried to remember where Luther had taken her when she was kidnapped. That had been a month ago, they were in pitch blackness, and they had the promise of nothing good ahead. So, basically, they were completely lost.
Something big moved ahead of them. Claudia clutched Chrissy’s arm. “What was that?”
“I don’t know,” Chrissy replied anxiously. Suddenly, Chrissy could’ve kicked herself. “Oh! I forgot, I have a flashlight in my backpack!” She dug around, pulled out her flashlight, and flicked it on, straight into the pale, leering face of Luther Rehtul.

About the Book
A mid school-year move has left adventurous young Chrissy bored and alone. When she discovers the door to another world through a tree in her own backyard, she seizes the opportunity to explore. She immediately makes a new friend, and is welcomed by the Winglet people. Her new friend introduces Chrissy to carving, and she finds she has amazing talent. But she soon learns that her visits have brought danger to the Winglet village.
There is someone who can help, but she is mysterious and elusive. The Winglets have magical gifts, but not enough to defend against the evil that has returned. As the story unfolds, Chrissy finds that she has become the key link between the mysterious friend Lisa and the Winglet people. Together they must uncover the truth if they are to defeat evil forces and restore peace for the Winglets.
About the Author
Inspired by her fourth grade teacher, Carolyn Neuman began her writing career by submitting poetry to a Maryland Young Authors’ Contest. Energized by her award, her writing soared to a new level. Just two years later, Adventures With the Winglets is her first published novel, full of imagination and creativity.
