Lyssa Zarift ready herself for the battle to come. Braiding her hair, she placed her golden halo around her head. This would ensure that if they lost the battle and they were captured she would be given immunity. Dressing in the black and dark blue synthetic suit, she began strapping on her weapons. She wore her sword down her back sheathed in leather. Strapping her guns around her thighs, she then added the small daggers to her boots. Around her waist she placed the stun grenades. She was the second daughter of King Zarift and that position made her responsible for the warriors of Zarift.
The warriors of Zarift were few and far between several years ago many of the male population of Zarift had caught a disease that wiped out thirty five percent of the men. Her warrior band was small in numbers she only had hundred warriors in her command. She wasn’t looking forward to this attack but yet she had to uphold her father’s honor. Even though she wasn’t a male it had always fallen to the second royal child, female or male, to be the commander.
King Zarift had received a communications from Zephron stating his fury at having the gems stolen. Zariftian should prepare for war. Zephron was declaring war against the Zarifts the gems were rare to only Zephron’s planet. Supposedly someone from Zarift had stolen them and King Zephron wanted them back.
Princess Tess was promised to Prince Voltron their marriage would form a political alliance with Zephron giving Zarift them the right to mine the gems to power their warships.
It angered Lyssa that Zephronians hoarded these gems and would not let other galactic planets use its rare power. Going to war over these gems is not what she wanted and she knew her warriors would probably come out in the end defeated. This didn’t set well with her but she had done all she could to train them now it was up to them to meet the challenge. No matter what the outcome of this war she would not let her father down. Looking one last time at herself in the mirror she turned and walked out of the room.
Voltron hated war, he had never agreed to waging this war, it would be a total slaughter of the Zariftian warriors and he was heartsick. The Zarifts had no idea of the destructive power of the gems. Zephronians would not make weapons out of the gems because of the unstable power they caused when used. He could not imagine who would steal the gems or how they would have gotten them without inside information. It had to be some traitor from Zephron.
They should have just waited until his marriage to Princess Tess? Then they would have been given the rights to mine the gems and all its technology except the technology to fashion a weapon out of them. By taking the gems off Zephron the Zephronians would only believe that their intentions was to build a weapon to conquer their universe, the line had been drawn, war was inevitable. Voltron’s father was furious, why did King Zarift insist they go to war? Just because Zephronians did not share the rare gem with neighboring planets had nothing to do with the technology for powering up a starship. It was because of its capacity to make dangerous weapons. Teaching the Zarifts how to mine and use the gems for space travel was a part of the marriage alliance. King Zephron could assume that stealing the gem had more to do with using the gems to make powerful dangerous weapons.
Putting on his battle uniform, he began placing his weapons on himself. He placed his golden wreath crown on his head. He placed his grandfather’s sword around his waist. He held it almost reverently, he had loved his grandfather. When his grandfather had died in an attack, his sword had fallen to the eldest grandson. He had promised his grandfather that this sword would only be used to protect his family. Now here he was going to war to protect his family against those who would make weapons of destruction. Voltron knew he would fight to protect his people even though he knew in his heart the Zarifts didn’t have a chance.
Leaving Varian Zephron’s military outpost the warriors transported to the warship the Erne and headed for the orbit of Zephron. Two days later the Zarifts attacked with a vengeance, hitting the Zephronians hard. They managed to take out the outer barrier of their protected City of Zephrite. Voltron was on the warship when the battle report came in. Running to the transporter he barked out commands to his crew as he and his warrior group transported to the surface of Zephron. Arriving on the surface he looked around there were several Zarifts lying dead, but a larger group was using a weapon to try and penetrate the walls of the city. Unsheathing his sword Voltron roared as he rushed into battle to take the group of Zarifts using the weapon.
