The Garfield Taylor family had only been residing in the northern portion of the State of Virginia for less than two years. Their children were all born in America and consisted of four boys and girls. Elizabeth was pregnant at the time they were settling on their land grant and would later give birth to another girl. The two brothers, Isaac and Joshua, aged twenty and eighteen, respectfully, had been conscripted to fight for the Confederate Army soon after they had began clearing their land. This came as a shock to the family that had moved there with such great hopes.
