INTRODUCTION: Jewel Marie was born on a farm in Marianna, Arkansas - December 31, 1936, maybe in the same room that her thirteen year old mother was born. The cotton fields were bare, the winds were cold and frost was in the air. One journey was ending and another one was beginning. The old year was leaving and in a few moments everyone around the world would be shouting, "Happy New Year"! She was CARE RU'S first child. The colors were not yellow and green: and both girl children cried. (1941); Faces were glued to the windows of the train that was taking us miles away from the cotton fields of Arkansas. Daddy Payne was waiting for us at 173 Talmadge Street. It was our first time having an upstairs and downstairs but there was no inside bathroom. It was very scary going to the outhouse at night. Auntie Alma Grace, (Daddy Payne's sister), live across the street at 176 Talmadge Street with Uncle Smiley. I remember that he was the first person that I had ever seen that didn't have any teeth, but he was always smiling. I loved going across the street to sit in Auntie's warm kitchen and eat apple and peach cobbler.

About the Book
This is an autobiography written by Jewel Marie McDonald. The words on these pages have brought about healing as they have put together the patchwork pieces of her quilt. The author has presented this accurate historical perspective that she lived daily. Other published works by the author are articles written as a part of her master’s thesis in Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio: “Whole Language, What is it?” (1989) and “The Effect of Sustained Silent Reading” (1990). She has been an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. since her initiation in 1957 while attending OSU. Her church ministry led her to serve many years in Ohio and Georgia as superintendent of Sunday school, director of vacation Bible school, and director of Christian education. She also has membership in Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity as well as the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE).
About the Author
Jewel M. McDonald is the founder and owner of the C. R. P. Center for Language Arts: (2006, Kennesaw, Georgia).The center is named in the honor of her mother, Carrie R. Payne. Mrs. McDonald is currently studying for her Doctoral Degree in Pastoral Community Counseling at the Argosy University of Atlanta Georgia. She received her B.S. Degree from the O.S.U.(1954) and her M. Ed. from the W.S.U. Dayton, Oh. (1989). Among her many awards and commendations are: "Effective School Process recipient, Gifted Endorsement Presenter, and Student Support Specialist. Her husband of thirty years (Robert) recently passed: (2010), encouraged her for many years to write her story. She is the mother of one daughter and one son and have four wonderful grandchildren. Jawharah, who is a Sophmore at Howard University, Rasheed and Nasir who are scholars at The Filton Leadership Academy and Maalan a kindergarten student at the Prime Care Learning Academy. They reside in Riverdale, Georgia.
