Mommy and Me

Ute was getting older and since the war was now over there was more freedom for all of the family. Ute’s father would become a graphic artist so if she wasn’t with him while he would draw or just spending time with him walking in the mountains, she could be found with her mother. One of her favorite things to do was to walk through the woods surrounding the city making arrangements of wild flowers and mushrooms for her mother. She took great care to braid these flowers into beautiful little garlands that were filled with blue, purple and white flowers as well as multi-colored mushrooms. Unfortunately by the time she got home her beautiful little creations had nearly completely fallen apart, but nonetheless her mother loved them. Any gift given to her, she would treasure as if it were gold. Ute loved to wander around the town and through the woods but she would never go too far. There were places that she would steer clear of and those would be the buildings and the homes that were located near the ancient stone wall surrounding the city. They frightened her in a way that she could not explain. She mentioned that she saw them as being so dark. I can imagine how old they must have looked as the wall that surrounded the city was centuries old; a remnant of when the city lay within the Eppenstein Castle nearly 800 years before. I think I may have been the one to go exploring that wall just to feel the “oldness” of it, to feel the history and to imagine all the stories that went with it.
