About the Author
Laval Wilkinson is a child and youth counselor, teacher, poet, author, and freelance writer. He is a native son of Jamaica who resides in Ontario, Canada, with his wife, TracyAnn, and daughter, Lavanya. He currently works as a child and youth counselor in the classroom, where he counsels children and youth with emotional and behavioral problems. He is also the program coordinator for Cavalry Child and Family Services. Laval is an avid reader and has been writing poems for over twenty years. He worked as a teacher with the Ministry of Education in Jamaica before he moved to Canada in 2001. He taught for one year in Toronto, Canada, before he became a child and youth counselor. In a three-year hiatus from the classroom, Laval worked as a client services manager for a marketing company in Toronto, before going back to his passion, working with children and youth. His absence from Jamaica is hardly noticeable as he has immersed himself in charitable work there assisting the poor and less fortunate, the very roots from which he comes. He contributes to public discourses through the publication of letters in the two major newspapers on the island. He is passionate about his country of birth and has a deep interest in the political and socioeconomic condition of his native home. Over the years Laval has used the medium of poetry, and writing in general, to share his views and perspectives on life. As one who grew up in abject poverty and did not attend high school, yet qualified himself to pursue tertiary education, he is an unrepentant believer in converting stumbling blocks into stepping stones. He has found his voice in writing, which he has utilized to share his enthusiasm for life and optimistic outlook.
