About the Author

Cyril Denys Cook was born in 1920 in the small town of Risca Monmouthshire, South Wales, United Kindom. His father was a Welshman who fought in WWI and his mother had little formal education. At age 17 Denys was underage when her voluntarily enlisted in the Welsh Guards, an infantry regiment of the British Army. He was determined not to "go down in the mines" as he father and grandfather had, and knew the Guards meant an education. Denys received honors towards his education. He was also boxing light heavyweight and lifeguarding for the Guards. Denys was then captured by the Germans for nearly 5 years at the beginning of WWII. He taught himself German, transcribed in shorthand a secret radio transmission to keep up the morale of his fellow prisoners and was released weighing only 98 lbs. (he was a 180 lb. light heavyweight boxer prior to the war).
