There is no call which has no price tag attached to it. Full obedience to the will and leading of God always involves sacrifice. For instance, the call of Noah to build an ark of salvation must have cost him money, time, energy, ridicule, molestations and harassment. Abraham the father of faith obeyed God at the expenses of leaving his home, friends and relations for an unknown place. He had to leave the known, or to sacrifice the known for the unknown. Moses answered call of God with a price-tag as well. Apart from the pain and agony of separation from his well cherished father-in-law and other friends in Median, he was to lose his shepherd job as well. In addition to these going back to Egypt to liberate them was to risk his life (as a wanted murderer by pharaoh’s decree). Elisha obeyed God at the expense of his lucrative profession. He was a successful farmer, on his far alone-twelve yokes of oxen (equivalent of twelve tractors of our time) were at work, see 2kings 19:19-21. What a large farm he had! Yet God’s call made him to pack up the plough and he even killed and cooked two of his cows and used for ploughing for a farewell party. I wonder how many believers today can be so happy and thrilled with god’s call to that extent of throwing a party to that effect. Peter, James and John answered God’s call at the expense of their fishing profession and God’s call made Mathew laid down his well paid customs job. “And has Jesus passed forth from thence, He saw a man named Mathew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and He saith unto him, follow me and he arose and followed him. -Matthew 9:9 Apostle Paul, well educated as a lawyer under Gamaliel (Acts22:3), with all his future career opportunities, was called to carry the gospel he once hated and rejected to the gentiles. Doctor Luke laid aside his medical profession to become Paul’s companion in missionary endeavours. Apart from sacrifice relating to laying down of professions and jobs, God’s call could even warrant your laying down your life (the supreme sacrifice). Indeed no one should venture to go into ministry till he is ready whenever the occasion demands to lay down his or her life. The early missionaries to Africa knew this quite well. Coffin used to feature prominently on their list of missionary needs. No one is truly ready for ministry till he or she is honestly able to say the Apostle Paul:
