INTRODUCTION
You (or someone that you know and/or care about) are going to prison, and there is nothing one can do about it. You may be going away for six months, six years or for life…it does not matter; you are still going to a place that will put everything that you have learned on the outside, to the test on the inside. Some will make it through their tenure behind the razor wire without even so much as a scratch, while others may not be as fortunate.
I did my time and was down for over four years and have seen how things work. I have seen that it does not matter how big and how mean you are (though that does have its advantages) but instead, how smart you are with regard to making your life safe and secure.
You will be entering a culture totally different from the one you have grown accustomed to on the outside. You will need to adapt, or your time in prison will drag on and you will have nothing but problems. You will need to be a patient individual and will also need to leave your ego in the real world somewhere. You can always go back to it when you get out.
You will be going to a place where the “animals run the zoo.” There may be administrators and Corrections Officers on the compound at all times, but, it is the inmates that dictate how things are done. In prison, it is the black inmates that control everything from who watches TV and where, to what items are sold in the Commissary each month. Unlike outside the walls, whites are the minority while black inmates make up the majority. If you happen to be white, be quiet and do your time. Do not try to change things, because you will be putting a target on your chest without even realizing it until it is too late. If you are black, take comfort in the fact that your life will be easier than most all of the other ethnic groups that makes up your prison population. If you are Hispanic, European, Chinese, Korean, or whatever, you too, make up a portion of the minority and should try to make it through your sentence without making trouble for yourself. There are prisons with a large Mexican or Hispanic population and these groups sometimes compete right up there with the blacks for control of who runs the show.
So, if you are white, just sit back and enjoy the show, and if you are black, good luck being the boss.
While prison is a sad and a bad place, it will definitely be an education. You will be able to take some of what you learned in prison back to the streets, but for the most case, you will want to leave it all behind.
