The significance of the title is in the name of the stallions Bonita and Andrew Hilgendorf acquire some chapters into the book. Bonita claims a dark gray stallion named Shadow when it ends up at her friends’ hacienda. Bonita then rides Shadow to the Bar CD ranch, where she rekindles her conflict with her enemy Donovan by injuring one of the Bar CD outlaws. Andrew arrives and involves himself in chasing off the outlaw, which creates a conflict of his own with Donovan and his son Kerwin. When Kerwin attempts to kill Andrew using a blood-red wild stallion, Andrew masters the horse and names him Sangre (which means blood in Spanish). Once Blood and Shadow and their riders team up, the vicious racist campaign against Bonita’s people perpetuated by Donovan and his outlaws is finally ended, putting an end to the bloodshed around Silver Junction.

About the Book
Bonita Valdez Rand has escaped from her brother’s custody in Mexico and now rides into New Mexico to kill Chad Donovan, the man responsible for her late husband’s death and for ruining her life. On the stagecoach, she meets Andrew Hilgendorf, a man searching for his notorious older brother Nick Doran at Donovan’s Bar CD ranch, a gathering place for outlaws. There is a lot of tension leading to a major gunfight involving most of the characters in the book, including Bonita’s brother, who has followed her from Mexico City. With the help of Nick and Andrew, Bonita kills her brother and Donovan and Donovan’s son Kerwin. The Bar CD outlaws are killed or captured by lawmen, including Nick, who is alive but seriously wounded and in the custody of Bob Fleming, a Texas Ranger friend of Andrew’s.
