About the Book

The book deals with the history, theory, and interpretation of bond-type triangles. It also gives a detailed survey of their application to the classification of the binary compounds of the main-block elements, their application in correlating bond type with the structures, conductivity, color, and band gaps of AB binary compounds, the classification of binary hydrogen compounds, and the possible extension of the triangles to the transition block.

About the Author

Dr. William B. Jensen is Oesper Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati, where he also serves as the founder and curator of the award-winning Oesper Collections in the History of Chemistry. Trained in inorganic chemistry at the University of Wisconsin, he is author of the books The Lewis Acid-Base Concepts: An Overview (Wiley-Interscience, 1980), Mendeleev on the Periodic Law (Dover, 2005), and Scientist in the Service of Israel: The Life and Times of Ernst David Bergmann (1903-1975) (Magnes Press, 2011), as well as over 250 reviews, articles, and notes in the fields of inorganic chemistry, history of chemistry, and chemical education. He is also the founding editor of the Bulletin for the History of Chemistry and recipient from the History Division of the American Chemical Society of the 2005 Edelstein Award for Outstanding Contributions to the History of Chemistry. He has just completed the manuscript of a history of chemistry entitled Philosophers of Fire: An Illustrated Survey of 600 Years of Chemical History for Students of Chemistry.
