About the Book
When Alfie finally puffed his way to the top of the ridge and looked down, his mouth fell open and he stared in disbelief. The little landing field that had served so valiantly during the war in the South Pacific now lay in ruin. Smoke and dust hung over its pock marked surface in a dense cloud and across the way a broken cluster of palms burned out of control.
"Damn!" Alfie exclaimed as he sank slowly to his knees. "How the hell are we ever going to get off this place?" To Alfie the airfield was their only link to the outside world and now it was gone. Despair swept over him in a flash as he surveyed the tragedy in front of him. In his self pity he had completely forgotten about Dewey. Only a movement at the far end of the field brought him back to the present.
As Alfie remained motionless and squinted into the sun the movement became larger as it neared, and he could see that it was a man, no it was two men walking towards him.
"Damn, this isn't right," he said softy and began loading the shotgun. A few seconds later he saw that the man in front had his hands on his head and the man behind was Dewey with his big rifle pointed at the middle of the other's back. Quickly and cautiously he made his way down to his friend.
