When we speak of Jesus as being our Lord, we mean that He is sovereign beyond any earthly dictator. Hebrews 2:10 refers to Jesus as being the Captain of the believers' salvation. This is not the mid-range officer's rank as in modern armies or navies, but carries the sense that Captain-General did when the Duke of Marlborough led all allied forces against Louis XIV in an exhausting war. Marlborough was the unquestioned commander and military genius of that time, probably on a par with Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Napoleon in military skill. The superiority and authority of command of the Lord Jesus goes far beyond any military leader, however great. We, like Adam, are from earth and our bodies are subject to death. But the Lord Jesus, the Second Adam, came sinless and perfect from heaven. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:47 See also John 6:32-41. The Lord Jesus is fundamentally above us even though He came in a human body like ours. He has absolute authority over us as no sinful human being can ever have regardless of the power that person may seem to have for the moment. On this basis we should be willing to inquire in the Holy Bible about God's instructions for family life with a real willingness to obey what we find. Several issues arise: 1) How did marriage originate? 2) Is marriage exclusively between people of the opposite sex? 3) Under what circumstances, if any, is divorce permitted? 4) Can a person who has been divorced or widowed remarry? 5) What does God say about polygamy? 6) What are some guidelines for choosing a marriage partner? 7) Beyond family life, what about eternal life and the Last Judgment?

About the Book
The Holy Scriptures provide a compass to guide us through life. In Warnings of a Watchman, author Thomas Logie calls our attention to the keys in experiencing family joy on earth and eternal joy in heaven by obeying the words written in the Scriptures.

We all must obey the Scriptures. I seek to follow the teachers of Nehemiah 8:8. So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. In fact, I and every other teacher of the Bible will face a stricter standard of judgment because we are handling the Holy Scriptures as distinct from mathematics, science, literature or other human learning. James 3:1.
The Holy Scriptures give us a better way. We have to start by acknowledging that we cannot govern ourselves as individuals any more than a nation can function without some form of government.

Thomas D. Logie is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. He has been practicing law since 1975 in the rural Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Logie has two children and four grandchildren.
