“The Reflection” June 9, 2009 One day in early June We walked along a path. It took us by the river Which was as smooth as glass. The reflection in the water Was a mirror image of The life that grew beside it Though below and not above. As I pondered on its beauty, It soon reminded me That my life is like that river And whose refection I must be. For I am not my own; I’ve been bought with a price. I’ll be a mirror of the master Of whatever rules my life. If money is my master, Then all decisions that I make Will focus around the cost Rather than what’s at stake. If prestige is my master, And I care what others say. Then my mouth will be silent When I should speak and show the way. If the bottle is my master, Cigarettes, or drugs, you see, Then they will be the ones Who are dictating to me. Oh, God, help me to choose wisely Whose master I will be. Don’t let me settle for an empty shell Of the life You have for me.

About the Book
Our lives are filled with experiences that evoke all kinds of emotions. We experience joy, sadness, disappointment, success, failure, and a host of other feelings as we walk through our lives from childhood to adulthood and on to life as seniors. We have moments when we are on "top of the world" and moments when we want to run and hide. It is my hope that as you read these poems, you will be blessed with memories from your own lives. However, I also hope that it makes you think about your destiny and the real meaning of life.
About the Author
Born in Bucyrus, Ohio, as Cheryl Annette Kissling, Cheryl graduated from Wynford High School in 1975. It was during her school years that she came to learn of the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ and made a personal decision to follow Him. After high school she attended Grand Rapids Baptist College, currently Cornerstone University, and Calvin College in a combined-curriculum program for teachers. Four years later, she graduated with a B.A. in English and a B.S. in elementary education respectively. After graduating from college, she also attended Central Michigan University for her post-graduate work. Since that time she has taught two years in Ohio, one year in Detroit, and twenty-seven years in mid-Michigan. Currently, she is a third grade teacher at Fulton Elementary School. Mrs. Laplander was married to her husband Steve in l989. She has one daughter, Erin, who has inspired several of her poems. Cheryl and her family attend the Maple Rapids Congregational Church and help out whenever possible. Her hobbies include writing poetry and children's stories, breeding German shepherds, crocheting, reading, and gardening.
