About the Author

For twenty-three years, I taught high school English in California. I recognized the challenge for native Spanish speakers to learn English and English speakers to comprehend Spanish. To meet the needs of students, I increased the English/Spanish cognate-ratio of classroom words from 34 percent in 1990 to 60 percent in 2001. Instructing replaced teaching; assist not help, exam no test. I consciously selected words recognizable in both languages. I engaged students in collecting English/Spanish cognates. I perused word lists and dictionaries for cognates. The English/Spanish Crossover Diccionario of 15,000 cognates is evidence English and Spanish cultures share magnificent/magnifico languages.
