The powerful Dark Being, known as Roman, dipped and swayed before the roaring flame known to the Dark minions as The Inferno of Torment. Unlike the Window to the World the Immortal Guardians used to watch over their human charges, this portal enabled the Dark to spy on those same mortals, seeking traits that the Dark could exploit and nurture until the soul of the mortal fell from the path destiny had written for it at birth, tumbling down into the darkness never to see the light again. Their turned souls became the army that Roman commanded in bringing pain, chaos and death to earth. His army had become bloated with its numbers and Roman worked hard to make sure the current trend of enrollment did not lessen.
The Inferno of Torment was not the comforting flames of campfires or even the flames that danced and warmed in fire places. Instead, it was an awful beast that gave off an icy chill and sucked all the light it could reach into its belly that was always hungry, never satisfied. It craved the failings of mortals and grew monstrous when wars were fought, lives were taken and deceit was faithfully practiced. Roman and the Dark minions had fed its hunger until it now reached high enough to tickle the under belly of the sky with its greedy tongues of fire.
The Guardians, led by the mighty Saul, beat back the flame with every soul
rescued, every human led back to the path written for it, every disaster averted. But the times were in Roman's favor as mankind grew more violent and more greedy in their bid to gain power, fame and fortune.
Roman and Saul had done battle over mortal souls more times than either of them could count. But Saul had never quite been able to put an end to Roman, who was his most powerful foe, his counter part and equal from the Dark.
Today Roman undulated slowly in front of the flame, seeming to be nothing more than a sinister wisp of smoke, but he was not watching the mortals. Today he was after a way to poke at his rival, Saul, again. He chose to spy on Saul and another Immortal, Jeannicca, as they stood before The Window to the World discussing the upcoming troubles that two of their charges would be facing.
Roman stopped his movements as he listened and, to his delight, detected jealousy and rivalry coming from the female Guardian. He could see how she envied Saul, his power and how she aimed to have that power for herself. He could see how she craved the adoration of her peers.
Roman could not believe his good fortune in finding this juicy tidbit and it took very little thinking for him to come up with a plan to use it to his advantage. The golden beauty of this second Immortal would be a feather in his cap if he could use her to get to Saul and work against him to throw destiny for two humans into turmoil.
All Roman had to do was send in one of his Dark forces to take over Jeannicca
and he, himself, would do the rest. It would be fatal to the one possessing the Guardian if Saul were to discover its treachery, but Roman was not worried about that. He cared not that his army would be less one. After all there were hundreds waiting to take its place.
Roman danced and twisted with glee as he celebrated his good luck. He knew that his time would be coming soon. When all it would take from him was whispers, Dark Whispers, and lives would be influenced and his flame would be fed.
Fed with murder.
