In this time of great tension between the harsh Communist East and the Western World , 1961,the coldest time of the Cold War, a young Jewish woman emigrates from Communist Romania to “free” Paris, the culture capital of Europe .She has been threatened and persecuted in Romania and she is happy to fly to Paris, the city of her dreams. But her sense of danger and insecurity follows her to the West and places her in a precarious situation: she has been stripped of her citizenship, she is stateless, she has no passport, no money, and is not permitted to work. She is in danger of deportation. In addition this is the time when the building of the Berlin Wall begins. Informed people speak about mobilization of the Armed Forces and a possible World War III. In spite of this, the heroine’s passionate love for Paris, for its beauty and freedom makes this trip deeply meaningful.
About the Author
Ada Nicolescu was born in Bucharest, Romania where she survived World War II and Stalin’s Communism. After finishing Medical School, in 1961 she emigrated to Paris, France and later to New York. She became a psychiatrist. She published three other books: Prelude in Black and Green, The Black and The Green, and Four Hundred Bones
