About the Author

Mr. Chur taught high school English and Literature in Southern California for twenty-three years. He recognized the challenge for native Spanish speakers to learn English and English speakers to comprehend Spanish. To meet the needs of bilingual students, Mr. Chur increased the English/Spanish cognate-ratio (Percentage of E/S cognates in 100 word text.) of classroom vocabulary from 34% in 1990 to 60% in 2001. Students contributed thousands of E/S cognates to the classroom vocabulary lists. The common E/S cognates collected by the Bell High School students are listed in the English/Spanish Manual of Common Vocabulario. Included in the E/S Manual to enhance reading comprehension, seven hundred prefix/base/suffix are identified. The E/S Manual is designed to assist instructors in introducing English and Spanish cognates in elementary and high school vocabulary lessons. Mr. and Mrs. Chur enjoy retirement and are blessed with twelve great grandchildren.
